Nandrolone - An anabolic steroid that is used to treat testosterone deficiency.

Natural Foods - Minimally processed foods with no artificial additives or preservatives.

Nausea - An unpleasant sensation in the stomach with the urge to vomit.

Nerve - A fibre or bundle of fibres containing neurons that use chemical and electrical signals to transmit sensory and motor information from one body part to another.

Nervous system - The system of neuron and tissues of the brain, spinal cord, and nerves that extend throughout the body.

Neural - Relating to the nervous system

Neural tube - The precursor to the central nervous system, this is a hollow tube from which the brain and spinal cord form.

Neural tube defects - One of the most common birth defects caused by the abnormal development of the neural tubes. Spina bifida and Anencencephaly are two examples. Taking a supplement of folic acid during the early stages of pregnancy is recommended to reduce the risk of a neural tube defect in the baby.

Neuropathy - A disease or malfunction of one or more nerve cells.

Neuropeptide Y - A neurotransmitter in the brain and in the autonomic nervous system that is thought to relay messages that help control eating behaviour

Neurotransmitter - A chemical that transmits signals between the nerve cells and the brain.

Niacin - One of the B vitamins that is needed for energy production in cells.

Nitrite - A salt or ester of nitrous acid containing the NO2 group that is used for food preservatives and are an important part of the nitrogen cycle.

Nonpathogenic - Not producing or incapable of causing disease.

Nonpolar - With regards to a molecule, it is likely to be hydrophobic and will not ionise when dissolved in water.

Norepinephrine - A neurotransmitter related to epinephrine that that can be secreted in response to stress and is responsible for the regulation of alertness and arousal.

Nutraceutical - Foods or food products that have additives thought to be healthy and medically beneficial by some people, although opinions are divided on this. Margarine is an example.

Nutrient - A chemical substance found in food that is necessary for good health.

Nutrient Dense Food - Foods that contain many nutrients in comparison to the calories. That is they have a high nutrient to calorie ratio.

Nutrition - Nourishment with respect to food for proper growth and health.

Nutritional deficiency - A lack of adequate nutrients in the diet.

Nutritional requirements - The substances needed in the diet to maintain a healthy life.

Nutritionist - A person who specializes in nutrition and can plan food and nutrition programs.
