Macrobiotic diet - A restrictive diet, containing mainly whole grains and beans.

Macronutrient - A nutrient that is needed in large quantities.

Macular degeneration - A disease of the eye brought about by death of the cells of the macula which is a critical part of the eye's retina.

Magnesium - A light metallic element that is used in the manufacture of body tissue, especially bone.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) - A medical imaging technique that uses a powerful magnetic field to look inside different parts of the body including the brain.

Malabsorption - A decreased ability to take up nutrients from the intestinal tract with the result that food is not digested and absorbed correctly. It can sometimes happen as a result of gastric bypass surgery.

Malaise - A feeling of unease or general discomfort and lack of energy and sometimes a precursor to illness.

Malignant - That which can cause harm or suffering. With regard to disease, it is used to describe abnormal cells that can invade other cells and spread to surrounding tissues.

Malnourished - Not having adequate nutrients in the diet leading to malnutrition.

Malnutrition - A chronic lack of sufficient minerals, vitamins and other nutrients to maintain good health.

Manganese - A brittle metallic element and oxidizing agent that helps to helps to metabolize carbohydrates and synthesize fats, including cholesterol. It is also needed for proper bone growth and for a healthy immune system.

Mercury - A heavy metal also known as quicksilver that is poisonous to humans.

Medication - Medicine or drugs used for treating medical conditions.

Metabolic - Relating to metabolism.

Metabolic activities - The sum total of the body's biochemical processes.

Metabolic rate - The rate at which your body expends energy.

Metabolism - The chemical processes occurring in the body that are necessary for maintaining life. Metabolism can be divided into the two categories anabolism and catabolism. Anabolism uses energy to construct parts of cells such as proteins and nucleic acids. Catabolism breaks down the organic matter using the energy for cellular respiration.

Microbiome - The collection of bacteria, viruses and some single cellular organisms that are found in, and on the human body.

Micronutrient - A nutrient that is required in very small quantities.

Milligram (mg) - A unit of weight equal to one-thousandth of a gram.

Mineral - A naturally occurring inorganic substance with a specific chemical composition and internal structure that is essential to life.

Mitochondria - Small structures within a cell that generate energy for use by the cell.

Monoglyceride - A compound consisting of one molecule of fatty acid esterified to glycerol.

Monounsaturated fat - A fat like olive oil where there is only one carbon double bond. These types of fat are normally liquid at room temperature but thicken when cooled.

Monosaccharides - These are sugars that cannot be hydrolysed into simpler sugars. For example fructose and glucose are monosaccharides.

Morbid Obesity - A severe obesity disorder in which a person's BMI is 40 or more. This type of obesity can often be life threatening.

Mucosa - Mucous membrane or linings of parts of the body that secrete mucous.

Mucous membranes - Epithelial tissues that line certain body cavities and secrete mucous. They include areas such as the mouth, nose, throat and digestive tract..

Muscle - Fibrous tissue of the body which principally functions as a source of power for movement. The different types are categorized into skeletal muscle (moving external parts of the body), cardiac muscle (moving the heart) and smooth muscle (moving the arterial walls and bowels).

Muscular - Related to the muscles. Also used to well developed muscles.

Muscular system - Refers to the collective term for all of the muscles of the body, skeletal muscle, cardiac muscle and smooth muscle.

Mycotoxin - A poison or toxin produced by a fungus

Myoglobin - A protein found in muscle fibres that store oxygen.

Myelin - The fatty material composed of proteins and phospholipids that sheathes nerve cells.
