Harris-Benedict equation - A formula used to calculate your basal metabolic rate (BMR) or minimum energy expenditure.

Healthy Food - Food that is said to be good for you or have health-giving characteristics to promote and sustain good health.

Healthy Weight - A body weight that is less likely to be linked with any weight-related health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or high cholesterol levels.

Health-promotion - Support and encouragement for better health and well-being. It has been defined by the World Health Organization's (WHO) 2005 Bangkok Charter for Health Promotion in a Globalized World as "the process of enabling people to increase control over their health and its determinants, and thereby improve their health."

Heart - The muscular organ that pumps blood received from veins into arteries throughout the body. It is a cone shaped organ about the size of a fist and is positioned in the chest behind the sternum.

Heart attack - A loss of blood supply to part of the heart which can result in death of the heart muscle.

Heart disease - Any disorder of the heart including but not limited to heart attacks, atherosclerosis, and coronary artery diseases.

Heavy metals - These are high density elements with metallic properties. Examples include cadmium, chromium, lead, mercury and nickel. They are grouped together in the periodic table.

Haemoglobin - The protein in red blood cells composed of globin and heme that carries oxygen through the body and gives blood its characteristic red colour.

Haemorrhoids - Swollen or enlarged blood vessels in the lower rectum or anus.

Hepatitis - An inflammation of the liver. It can be caused by bacterial or viral infections, certain toxins and parasites.

Herbal - Relating to or made from herbs.

Hernia - The protrusion of an organ or body structure through a weakened opening of the wall that contains it. A small to medium percentage of patients who have weight-loss surgery develop a hernia at some stage.

High blood pressure - This is an increase of the pressure in the bloodstream maintained by the heart and is usually pressure that is greater than or equal to 140/90 mmHg for long periods,. High blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and strokes.

High-density lipoprotein (HDLs) - A lipoprotein has a high protein content and carries cholesterol in the bloodstream.

High potency - A claim about vitamin or mineral content, defined as 100% or more of the Recommended Daily Intake

Histidine - An essential amino acid that your body needs during periods of growth. It is also used during periods of stress and recovering from illness or injury.

Homeostasis - The regulation of the proper internal state or equilibrium of a system.

Homocysteine - An amino acid produced when you digest proteins and found naturally in the blood plasma.

Hookworm - A parasitic nematode that attaches to the intestinal wall.

Hormone - A compound produced by one set of cells in the body that influence the function of another set of cells.

Hunger - The strong desire and physiological need for food.

Hydration - The process of combining or treating with water.

Hydrogenate - The process of combining or treating with hydrogen. For example, combining fat with hydrogen produces a saturated fat.

Hydrolysis - A chemical reaction that uses water to break the bonds within a molecule.

Hygiene - The practice of maintaining good health through cleanliness.

Hypercholesterolemia - High levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.

Hypercholesterolemic - An excessive quantity of cholesterol in the blood and tissues.

Hyperglycemia - Excessive amounts of sugar in the blood often associated with diabetes mellitus.

Hyperkalemia - Excessive amounts of potassium in the blood.

Hyperlipidemia - Excessive amounts of fat or lipids in the blood.

Hypermetabolic - A higher than normal rate of metabolism. It can occur with some eating disorders.

Hypertension - A higher than normal blood pressure that can lead to a greater risk of heart disease or strokes.

Hypoglycemia - A deficiency of glucose in the blood or low blood sugar levels.

Hypothalamus - One of the glands that control the endocrine, hormone and pituitary activities in the body.
