Fad Diets - Popular weight loss diets that are usually nutritionally inadequate and not permanent methods of weight reduction.

Fast food - Food that can be prepared and served quickly.

Fat - A major source of energy in the diet that helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Some types of fat including saturated fat can increase the body's levels of cholesterol, increasing the risk of heart disease.

Fatigue - A condition characterized by extreme tiredness resulting from physical or mental exertion.

Fat Cell Theory - The proposal that the number and size of fat cells determines the amount of fat that is stored.

Fat-soluble vitamins - Vitamins that dissolve in fat and that are more easily stored in the body as a result.

Fatty acid - A chain of carbon and hydrogen atoms known as a carboxylic acid that are the building blocks of the fat in our bodies.

Fenfluramine - A weight loss drug, in a class of drugs called anorectics which act as an appetite suppressant.

Fermentation - A reaction that occurs when sugar is broken down to alcohol in the presence of yeast or certain types of bacteria.

Fibre - The indigestible parts of plants also known as roughage that can aid the digestion process by providing bulk to the stools.

Flavonoids - A class of water-soluble pigments that are found in many plants. Many of them act as antioxidants and can have an important role in maintaining bodily health.

Fluoride - A compound of the element fluorine that is used as an additive in water supplies and toothpaste to reduce tooth decay.

Folate - Also known as folic acid, this is one of the B vitamins that is essential for cell growth and reproduction.

Food additive - A substance added to foods to improve the nutritional value, the taste, the appearance, or the shelf-life of the food.

Food and Drug Administration - A government agency tasked with determining the safety of foods and drugs marketed in the United States.

Food Diary - A written record of all food and drink consumed in specified periods.

Food Guide Pyramid - A pyramid shaped guide of healthy foods with selections based on dietary guidelines.

Food poisoning - An illness caused by the bacteria or toxins in contaminated food.

Fortification - The addition of vitamins and minerals to improve the nutritional content of a particular food.

Fortified Foods - These are foods that have been altered by adding vitamins or minerals to them.

Free radicals - An unstable and highly reactive molecule fragments that can damage the cells and possibly cause the progression of cancer.

Functional food - Also known as medicinal food is food whose health benefits are claimed to be higher than those traditionally assumed for similar types of foods.

Fungal - Relating to or characteristic of fungus.

Fungus - Spore producing organisms that feed on organic matter including moulds and yeasts.
