Bacteriostatic - Chemical or biological agent that prevents the growth of bacteria

Balanced Diet- A diet that includes all essential nutrients in suitable quantities

Bariatrics - A branch of medicine that deals with obesity including its cause and prevention. Bariatric are physicians who specialize in non-surgical weight management.

Bariatric Surgery - A weight loss method used for people who have a high body mass index usually a BMI above 40. It is surgery that is performed on the stomach and/or intestines to help the patient with extreme obesity lose weight.

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) - The minimum energy required to maintain vital functions, such as breathing and keeping the heart beating while remaining at rest

Beta-glucans - Polysacharides most commonly found in cellulose, bran, certain fungi and bacteria that lower cholesterol levels.

Bile - A bitter tasting yellow to green coloured liquid produced in the liver which suspends fats for absorption

Bingeing - An eating spree or unrestrained consumption and excessive self indulgence with regards to food.

Bioavailability - The degree to which the body can make use of particular nutrients.

Biodiversity - The variety of life or the richness of different species within a particular area.

Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) - A means of estimating the amount of body weight that consists of fat and non-fat parts.

Bioengineering - Engineering techniques taken from both engineering and the biological sciences used to solve medical problems.

Blood clotting - An important process by which blood forms a solid mass to prevent excessive bleeding.

Blood Glucose - The amount of glucose that is present in the blood. Glucose is the main sugar that is broken down from the food in the diet. It is carried through the bloodstream and provides energy to all cells in the body.

Blood pressure (BP) - A measure of the pressure exerted by the blood against the walls of the arteries and is produced primarily by the beating of the heart.

Body Fat - A combination of glycerol and fatty acids and with respect to humans the percentage of body fat he/she has is the total weight of that person's fat divided by their weight.

Body Mass Index (BMI) - The body mass index is a standard ratio of weight to height, and often used as a general indicator of health. The BMI is calculated by dividing the body weight in kilograms by the person's height squared in meters.
A normal BMI is usually between 18 and 25.

Bone marrow - This is the spongy tissue inside some of the bones. These bones contain stem cells and it is where new blood cells are produced.

Boron - An essential trace mineral necessary for creating strong bones and building muscles.

Botulism - A rare but very serious form of food poisoning caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum which can induce paralysis.

Bowel - This is another name for the intestine. The small bowel is the small intestine and the large bowel is the large intestine.

Brain allergy - An allergy affecting the brain functions.

Bulimia - An eating disorder characterized by binge eating and often followed by self-induced vomiting or purging.
